🌌 To Boldly Go: A Things Kids Hate Poem About Imaginary Planets

As a children's poet, I often like to explore the everyday ups and downs of childhood with humour and imagination. To Boldly Go is a playful, space-themed poem that imagines a universe filled with planets no child would ever choose to visit — places ruled by spinach, chores, patience, and early bedtimes! It’s a poem about all the things kids don’t like, bundled into quirky, rhyming stanzas that zoom beyond our galaxy and land firmly in the world of childhood rebellion.

This things kids hate poem taps into common childhood dislikes — from smelly cheeses to sitting still — but does it in a way that encourages giggles and reflection. Teachers and parents can use it to spark fun conversations about perspective, or even inspire children to invent their own "Planet No-Thanks" verses. After all, poetry should feel like a playground — even if it’s one without screens!

Creative Writing, Drama, Art and Poetry Ideas: (Things Kids Hate Poem)

This poem is a brilliant launchpad for drama, writing, art, and poetry activities in the classroom. Children can bring the poem to life through performance, acting out journeys to each dreaded planet with exaggerated expressions and gestures. In writing and poetry, they could create their own 'Planet No' verses, imagining new worlds full of things they personally dislike — or, to flip the concept, invent planets that grown-ups would hate to visit: Planet Permanent-Mess, Planet Screen-Time-Never-Ends, or Planet Ten-More-Minutes-Before-Bed. In art, pupils can design colourful space posters or 3D models of their invented planets, labelled with exaggerated features. These imaginative tasks help children explore empathy and perspective in a humorous and creative way.
