When I first heard Purple Rain as a teenager, it wasn’t just an album—it was a revelation. Prince wasn’t merely singing; he was opening up a world that felt both electric, eclectic and intimate. Each track was a lifeline, a secret escape hatch, a coded message of rebellion and belonging. Years later, I found myself revisiting those same songs—not just with my ears, but with my pen. That’s how Purple Rain Refuge came to life: a poem written not just in admiration, but in deep gratitude.
This poem is a personal homage to Purple Rain - the album that gave me comfort, courage and connection in those confusing, wonder-struck teenage years. I wanted to pay tribute to the entire journey of Purple Rain—from the explosive euphoria of Let’s Go Crazy to the soul-shaking echoes of Purple Rain itself (That ending still gets me 40 years on). Never mind The Beautiful Ones rendition I subjected my teenage friends too and the wild dancing to Baby I'm A Star. Every line in the poem is a refuge I once took, and often still do. It’s about the spaces in the songs, the ghosts in the lyrics, the pieces of ourselves we rediscover each time we listen.
If you grew up with Prince’s voice pouring through your headphones, I hope this poem resonates with you. I hope it makes you pause, hum, and remember your own teenage refuge—because Purple Rain wasn’t just music. It was memory, identity, poetry.
