I wrote “Gifted Kids” as a quiet challenge to the narrow ways we sometimes define success at school. Too often, giftedness is boxed into test scores or tidy outcomes, when what I see every day is something much richer and more human. This school poem for kids celebrates the moments that don’t always get measured: the child who includes someone else in a game, the one who sings out loud without fear, or the one who gets their knees muddy chasing an idea. For me, those everyday acts of curiosity, courage, and kindness are just as important as any academic achievement.
At its heart, Gifted Kids is an inclusion poem for kids. It’s written to reassure children that being gifted isn’t about being better than others, but about being fully yourself. Whether a child is creative, thoughtful, playful, or quietly observant, this poem says: you belong, and what you bring matters. As the author, I wanted Gifted Kids to leave children feeling seen, valued, and confident that the things they naturally do - play, imagine, care - already make them gifted.
