As a poet, I’ve always been fascinated by perspective. In my poem Free As a Bird, I explore the idea that freedom isn’t always what it seems. A caged budgie and wild pigeons each believe the other has the better life—but who is truly free?
This freedom poem for kids invites readers to reflect on two sides to every story and challenges us to rethink what it means to be free. It’s a conversation starter, perfect for those interested in philosophy for kids, shifting perspectives, and thought-provoking poetry.
I’d love to hear your thoughts—does freedom come from our circumstances or our mindset? Drop a comment below!

Free As a Bird
Free as a bird!
Tell that to my wings
raged the budgerigar
on his budgerigar swing
Free as a bird!
You pigeons don’t see
raged the budgerigar
what it’s like to be me
Caged like a bird!
You don’t know you’re born
raged the window ledge pigeons
unloved and forlorn
Caged like a bird!
With mirrors and bells
raged the window ledge pigeons
Well out here it’s hell
