'Before I Was Yoyo Champion Of The World' A Poem About Play & Perseverance

Updated: 1 day ago

I am loving National Poetry Day's theme Play so I wrote this poem to combine the memory of playing with toys with my current joy: playing with words.

It's also a poem about the power of perseverance and the power of belief - especially the love and belief that others have in you.

I loved my Yoyo as a kid and still remember the newfound pride I felt when I learned a new yoyo trick: 'Around the world' and 'Take your dog for a walk' were my favourites.

I remember Nan buying me a yoyo from Woolworths before she took me to the local cafe for an egg custard tart.

I hope you enjoy my poem about play for kids.

A Poem about Play for Kids : Before I Was Yoyo Champion of the World

Years Before I Was Yoyo Champion of the World

My Nan bought me a Yoyo

My skills were only so-so

I learned to make it go-go

toward my toes down low-low

But still the skill I lack-lacked

The skill I couldn’t crack-crack

was how to get the knack-knack

to flick my Yoyo back-back

But Nan said, Love, I know-know

your confidence will grow-grow

and one day you will show-show

the whole world how to Yoyo
